Positioning units for use in potentially explosive environments


IEF Werner offers linear units and even positioning systems for use in potentially explosive environments. In a specific use case, e.g., a turning station used in the supply area of a painting chamber, use components suitable for use in EX-protection zone 2 in the temperature range T3 (up to 200 °C surface temperature) must be chosen.

The turning unit essentially consists of the two following units:

  • linear unit profiLINE 140 as Z-axis
  • pallet gripper with integrated turning unit

What must be observed when building such positioning systems?

  • use of components with the corresponding declaration of conformity, e.g. servo motors, planetary gears, cable carriers, toothed belts with conductive surfaces
  • no use of standard limit switches
  • installation of control components outside of the potentially explosive area

Where can such devices be used?

  • supply area of paint and powder coating systems
  • bottling systems (e.g. cosmetic products)

Basic terms of explosion protection

Areas where a dangerous, potentially explosive atmosphere may arise are classified in zones according to the probability of this EX atmosphere occurring in the zones. Gas atmospheres are classified in Zone 0 , Zone 1 and Zone 2. Dust atmospheres are classified in Zone 20, Zone 21 and Zone 22. The zone classification must be performed by the plant operator. Devices used in zone 2 / 22 must meet category 3. Documentation (ignition source assessment) is drawn up by the manufacturer.

Area of use of the IEF positioning units

Zone 2 Zone 22
Area where regular operation will usually not or only briefly lead to a potentially explosive atmosphere as a mixture of air and flammable gases, vapours or mists. Area where an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of dust suspended in the air does not or only briefly arise in regular operation.
